Visit Ogden Highlights the Wonders of Dark Skies Month in Weber County
OGDEN, Utah — This April, Visit Ogden invites residents and visitors to experience the unique beauty of the night sky as part of Utah’s Dark Skies Month celebration. Recognized globally for its commitment to dark sky preservation, Utah offers unparalleled opportunities for stargazing, with 23 designated International Dark-Sky Places including national parks, state parks, and entire communities.
Weber County stands out for its efforts in dark sky preservation, due to the urban-adjacent geography of its Dark Sky Park. North Fork Park, located just a short drive from downtown Ogden, is an International Dark Sky Park, offering some of the best night sky viewing opportunities in Northern Utah. The park is not only a testament to the region’s natural beauty but also to the community’s dedication to preserving the dark sky as a valuable resource for both residents and visitors.
Taylor Hartman, Director of Marketing and Communications for Visit Ogden, emphasizes the significance of these efforts: “Our dark skies are a treasure, contributing to the unique character of our region and enhancing the quality of life for those who live here and visit. Dark Skies Month is a perfect time to celebrate these efforts and encourage everyone to explore the night sky.”
"We are so fortunate to live in a county that values its Dark Skies and the experiences they can provide,” said Sara Toliver, Visit Ogden president/CEO. “Numerous partners have collaborated to provide education to ensure the continued enjoyment through preservation of our Dark Skies, as well as several opportunities to enjoy and learn more through events at North Fork Park and at the Compass Rose Lodge.”
The observance of Dark Skies Month is aligned with broader tourism and community strategies in Utah, focusing on sustainable and responsible tourism. By promoting dark sky preservation, Utah not only offers exceptional experiences for stargazers but also contributes to environmental conservation and supports local economies.
In addition to North Fork Park, the Ogden Valley and surrounding areas boast several locations and initiatives aimed at dark sky conservation. From specially designed lighting in public spaces to educational programs about the importance of dark skies, Weber County is at the forefront of ensuring that the beauty of the night sky remains accessible to all.
As Dark Skies Month unfolds, Visit Ogden encourages everyone to take advantage of night sky viewing opportunities available throughout the region.
“It’s a chance to rediscover the wonders of the universe that unfold above us each night, reminding us of the awe-inspiring beauty of our world and the importance of protecting it,” Hartman said.
