2015 USA Weightlifting National University Championships Heading to Weber State University
OGDEN, UTAH—USA Weightlifting’s national event series will return to the Beehive state in September 2015 when Weber State University hosts the National University Championships at the university’s Wildcat Center.
The annual competition determines the Strongest College in America, and it is the primary qualification event for the International University Sports Federation (FISU)/International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World University Championships.
Weber State University has its own weightlifting club and offers tuition waivers to national-level athletes and above, having begun the university’s involvement in 2013. The Ogden-based school saw bringing the National University Championships to the campus as a logical next step for its program.
The event will feature three existing and established programs such as the United States Olympic Training Site at East Tennessee State University, the U.S. Olympic Education Center at Northern Michigan University and the USA Weightlifting High Performance Center at Louisiana State University at Shreveport.
Utah’s weightlifting community, having hosted a reputable National Championships in nearby Salt Lake City, and led by chairwoman Debbie Carroll, have partnered with the university as well as the Utah Sports Commission and Visit Ogden to bring this event to Utah for the first time. The coalition will provide transportation for participants from both Salt Lake City International Airport and Ogden Regional Airports.
Weber State University Vice President of Administrative Services Dr. Norm Tarbox said of the event: “Weber State and our community partners are thrilled to host USA Weightlifting for its 2015 National University Championships. Athletes and fans will find our facilities to be top notch, our community of Ogden to be spectacular and our hospitality to be unmatched. Thanks to USA Weightlifting for this tremendous opportunity.
“The commitment that Weber State University has shown in a short time to USA Weightlifting is impressive and, with the track record that Utah has with the 2014 National Championships, we are confident this will be a fantastic event for the strongest students in America.”
“It’s an incredible opportunity for Utah host another USA Weightlifting Championship,” Utah Sports Commission President and CEO Jeff Robbins added. “Utah continues to benefit from this partnership with USA Weightlifting, both economically and in furthering our state’s Olympic legacy efforts.”
